Waking in Anaskar Prison, covered in blood and accused of murder, nobody will listen to Notch’s claims of innocence until he meets the future Protector of the Monarchy, Sofia Falco.

But Sofia has her own burdens. The first female Protector in a hundred years, her House is under threat from enemies within, the prince has made it clear he does not want her services and worst of all, she cannot communicate with her father’s sentient mask of bone, the centuries-old Argeon. Without the bone mask she cannot help anyone — not herself, and certainly not a mercenary with no powerful House to protect him.

Meanwhile, far across the western desert, Ain, a young Pathfinder, is thrust into the role of Seeker. Before winter storms close the way, he must leave his home on a quest to locate the Sea Shrine and take revenge on the people who drove his ancestors from Anaskar, the city ruled by the prince Sofia and Notch are sworn to protect, whether he wants their help or not.

Create Your Own Fantasy Being For The Epic Fantasy Theme Park! | Fun Friday #25

Mulluane | Friday, September 26, 2014 | 5 Comments so far
This is another take on my popular Fantasy Theme Park series. First we had Create An Attraction For An Epic Fantasy Theme Park which yielded some hilarious results (and alot of views). That post could use some more love by the way. Don't be shy. We are all a bit crazy here...

Next we had Create A Fantasy Creature for my Theme Park Zoo. That one also yielded a few hilarious entries and alot of views. Not that it couldn't be improved with a few more entries... just saying...

Now we need some Beings to staff our park! But not your run-of-the-mill elves, dwarves or mermaids, no we need unique, creative and unusual Beings to amaze and amuse our guests. Mix them, match them, or start from scratch but create something truly wild and wonderful!

But that is not all....

Give your Being a job within the park. I mean we can't have unusual Beings running around unemployed now can we? It would be bad for the economy yanno.

So come join me in making this the best (and only) Epic Fantasy Theme Park ever! Simply can't do it without you. It is too big a job for one old bat...

My Creature

As most of you know, our world is connected to many other strange and unusual parallel universes. And nobody knows this better than the employees of Epicon Laboratories; located in an undisclosed nexus of said worlds. If questioned - under torture of course - employees will claim that the secret laboratory is located in Area 51, then immediately self destruct. Due to complaints from the custodial staff, further attempts to confirm this have been suspended. But I digress...

When I gave the very mad* scientists the task to create a useful creature for my Epic Fantasy Theme Park they cackled gleefully and got right to work.

*Note* Mad = Insane though it can also equal angry, depending on the situation. We try to avoid making the scientists angry though. The number of accidental explosions seems to increase when that happens. Unknown by most, this is the true cause of earthquakes, volcanic activity and global warming...
So, getting right to work, our mad scientists scoured the surrounding universes for something they could work with. On one of those alternate worlds they discovered the below creature on the left. Instantly realizing the possibilities, they carefully proceeded with replacing the creature's bubble brain with that of a Golden Retriever! After several months of intense training, which mostly consisted of teaching it how to walk... and use arms... and hands... they have now unveiled their greatest creation ever.

Critter Transformation

Meet Fetch, a wonderful being which has one talent and one talent only. It retrieves lost kids!

Yep. You read that right. Whenever a kid or two goes missing, Fetch is called in to correct the problem. One sniff* of a backpack (strange how the parents always seem to have those, just not the kid that was wearing them) and Fetch is off to go... well... fetch!

*Note* If you are wondering how it sniffs without a nose, well I could tell you but then the mad scientists would get angry and I already warned you about what would happen then...
In no time flat, our hero returns with a puppy, I mean a kid or two, grasped firmly by the back of the neck, and deposits them in a heap at the feet of the lucky *cough* parent.

A simple pat on the top of that massive head is all the reward our faithful employee needs while the kids swear vehemently to never run off again. (And this time they really mean it too!)

*Disclaimer: no Golden Retrievers were harmed in the creation of this Being. The retriever, appropriately named Bubbles, seems to be content with a head full of... bubbles. It might be noted though that she looks a bit startled every time one of them pops...
Maddalena's Creature: Blogger/Reviewer @ Space and Sorcery

We all know that theme parks are wonderful places where we can explore, enjoy, have fun and adventure. But... People also mean trash, and huge amounts of people mean HUGE amounts of trash, especially when some of those people are not always waiting to find a wastebasket for their food wrappers, drink cups and so on... So, after the latest strike from the cleanup detail that resulted in the Haunted Castle being almost buried in trash, the Shadow Management decided to adopt extreme measures... Enter the TRASH DEVIL: a creature born and bred to hunt down even the smallest piece of litter and devour it with relish. Yes, because the Trash Devil LOVES its trash - no matter the flavor.

♥♥♥ So now it is your turn. Make it wild, make it wonderful but make it! We really do need some new staff desperately. Please come help make this Park a rousing success. ♥♥♥

Weekly Quote #21 ~ Lauren DeStefano

Mulluane | Thursday, September 25, 2014 | 2 Comments so far

“Fall has always been my favorite season.

The time when everything

bursts with its last beauty,

as if nature had been saving up all year

for the grand finale.”

Weekly Quote #20 ~ Piers Anthony

“Being terrified but going ahead

and doing what must be done

that's courage.

The one who feels no fear is

a fool, and the one

who lets fear rule him

is a coward.”

Isopod Got Your Tongue? | Tuesday Trivia

Mulluane | Tuesday, September 16, 2014 | 2 Comments so far
Cat got your tongue? No? Well if you are a red snapper a parasite named Cymothoa Exigua just might!

***Warning*** This is kinda gross but extremely fascinating.

Cymothoa Exigua replaces tongue in red snapper
Source: wired.com

Is it me or does that tongue have 2 little eyes!

From Wikipedia:

Cymothoa exigua extracts blood through the claws on its front, causing the tongue to atrophy from lack of blood. The parasite then replaces the fish's tongue by attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stub. The fish is able to use the parasite just like a normal tongue. It appears that the parasite does not cause any other damage to the host fish. Once C. exigua replaces the tongue, some feed on the host's blood and many others feed on fish mucus. This is the only known case of a parasite functionally replacing a host organ. There are many species of Cymothoa, but only C. exigua is known to consume and replace its host's tongue.

Proving once again that truth is stranger than fiction...

Both of the linked sources have more detail on this unique creature. Well worth the read if you'd like more information. The various lengths that some creatures go to just to survive and procreate is an endless source of amazement to me and this ranks right up near the top of my list of strange and unusual!

So what odd creatures are on your list?

“Three things trust and cherish well-

The horse on which you ride,

The beast that guards and watches,

And your shield-mate at your side.”

Interview with A. J. Martinez ~ Author of the Ungifted Elf

Mulluane | Wednesday, September 10, 2014 | Be the first to comment!

(Wacky Interview Series)

In case you missed the first interviews in this series, here is the deal...I read alot of author interviews and they are good, informative, and interesting but rarely tell me all that much about an author's personality. I often find myself thinking, "Well that's all good and everything but I want to know more about the real live person behind the book!"

So, I decided to conduct a "fun" interview; something that will give my readers a good laugh and be fun for the authors. You will not find serious questions covering books, publishing, writing or future plans. Instead you will get a chance to see how they react to a bunch of crazy questions and scenarios.

This time around I asked A.J. Martinez, author of Ungifted Elf -- which I spotlighted here -- if he would consider doing one of these. He said it sounded like fun! So, I sent him the 10 wacky questions, plus the 2 bonus substitutes and like those before him, he answered all 12! So here for your reading pleasure is a look inside of the mind of A.J. Martinez...

A. J. Martinez

1) Which magical power would you like to have and why?

I want the power to teleport like the guy from the movie Jumper. So that I can go where ever I want.

2) What would you do if you had a time machine?

I probably wouldn’t use it honestly. I rather not know what will happen in the future and live in the present. However I might experiment and put a monkey in the time machine.

3) What was your funniest/most interesting encounter with a fan?

They knew my real name….scary

4) If you had a chance to spend some time with one mythical being, what would it be and why?

Maybe an angel. I don’t know. A being that has wings. I just want to fly

5) If aliens landed in your backyard, what is the first thing you would ask them?

I would ask them. “So yeah what with the Bermuda triangle dudes?”

6) What quirky habit do you have that often gets you teased by your peers or family?

Interesting question. I space out a lot and people always tell me that my head is always in the clouds but then again maybe that is just part of being a fantasy author.

7) What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to tell stories. I was actually writing and drawing anime characters. At first I wanted to make comic books. Then I learned about the kindle.

8) If you could be reincarnated as an animal, what would you be and why?

An eagle. Because they are the greatest birds of all.

9.) My readers want to know what you had for breakfast. Not sure why exactly...

Smash plantains with ketchup. I am Hispanic.

10) Why in the world did you consent to doing this wacky interview? I mean there is not one question here about your books, your writing or your future plans!

Maybe one of your followers will like my dorky answers who knows. Plus is a fun interview so why not.

Bonus Questions!

11) Who is your favorite comedian or cartoon character and why?

Favorite comedian so far is Louie CK. Favorite cartoon character ….thats a hard one. I am hoping you are counting anime into this. I would say Naruto.

12) How would you describe your sense of humor?

Dry british humor.

Thanks AJ for consenting to do this interview!

♦ Author's Bio ♦

Hello there my name is A.J. Martinez and I am a fantasy author living in the state of Connecticut USA. I walk with my head as high as the clouds and my feet on the ground. I am on a journey to became a full time writer. These stories in my head are trying to find a way to manifest and writing its the way to bring the world of Odealeous to life. Growing up with low self esteem, I sought solace in other worlds. Reading novels, drawing characters, japanese anime, movies and RPG games.

My desire is to write fantasy stories that will make one soar with the wings of Icarus. To write heart pounding stories to make one wish that the pages will never end. To write stories in a world beyond Hogwarts and Middle Earth and on to the world of Odealeous. To write stories that make one think of the stars of the night during daylight. Stories that make one see rare colors and hear sweet songs only the sirens sing by a glowing river. To tell stories where the arts of the mystic and dragons seem as though they had gone extinct. I write what I dream about and dream so that I can write.

I am quite a geek and I am a big time Anime fan. I enjoy going to conventions with my friends and rave parties.

My favorite movie is "the matrix" I never get tire of watching it.

That is a short summary of me. Sorry, I am better at describing my stories and characters than myself. Any questions don't hesitate to contact me. (source)

♦ Author's Bio ♦

Chad Corrie has enjoyed creating things for as far back as he can remember, but it wasn't until he was twelve that he began to write. Since then he's taken to writing comics/graphic novels, prose fiction of varying lengths, and an assortment of other odds and ends.

This sundry collection of works echoes part of his background in which he's been an editor and writer for an online magazine, owned his own publishing company; worked as a pawn broker, bookseller, pizza cook, toy company rep, and magazine/book merchandiser, among other vocational exploits.

He also produces podcasts. Some of them are tied to his works and worlds but others, like Cauldron of Worlds and Pages From The Writer's Desk, are set up to help those interested get the kind of insight and aid he would have enjoyed and benefited from when first starting out.

Chad also speaks from time to time at various venues about writing, world creation, comics/graphic novels, and other related issues, helping supply people with the information and resources they might need for taking their next step.

A Minnesota native, he continues to make his home in the "Land of Sky Blue Waters."
